NYC Claims Power Button as New Condom Logo

This is the first in our series of compilations designed to inspire by way of sharing whats new and cool in design today. Our daily creatiques are an extension of our thoughts. The are news articles we’ve read and found interesting, graphic imagery or videos we stumble upon while browsing and much more. It defers from our inspiration category because its not cohesive by all means and does not maintain a uniform theme. it is in fact randomly compiled. enjoy, and PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO CRETIQUE.

The international electrical sign featured on every Xbox 360 and -nearly every- Dell PC is a recognizable image known by any gamer; PC or console. After a New York contest, “Enter the Web,” the world-wide “power-on” symbol will now be known to a completely different, and slightly naughtier, demographic.

New Yorkers have a new sex symbol. The international sign for the power button (the circle with the line thrusting out the top) will grace the wrappers of millions of New York City condoms. New York City’s health commissioner, Dr. Thomas Farley, unveiled the design in a ceremony featuring the five finalists.

“When I saw [the design], I said this is pure genius,” Farley told the crowd. “Everyone recognizes that symbol on their PC. People should use their own power to control their sexual health.” And once you see the power-on logo in a sexual context, it does have a dirty vibe to it. That’s the beautiful thing about designing a condom wrapper: It makes the most simple image seem erotic.

Once the logo begins to be distributed on condom wrappers, a familiar sign for gamers will become much more than that for New Yorkers, and could easily become the most widely recognized sign. Some are considering it could have been designed by Dell, as it would prove to be an invaluable marketing tool for its computers.

Kevin Yuen-Kit Lo at LOKi design shared a recent poster he designed for Tadamon!’s Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign. The current situation in Gaza is undeniably tragic, but like most of what happens in Israel/Palestine the response by progressives in the US is a mixed bag. The typical left/right dividing lines seem to shift when it comes to that region and I find it hard to talk with people about it since emotions run so high. I’m interested to know where readers of this blog fall. Feel free to comment below, though please be respectful of others here, I’m not looking for diatraibes and will delete personal attacks.

Paul Garbett of Naughtyfish design in Sydney, Australia shared this aggressive poster design. The use of negative logo design is quite clear in this poster design theme.

The text on this poster reads:
“There are currently 26 million people living with AIDS in Africa.

During 2005, there were 3.2 million new infections in Africa and 2.4 million deaths as a result of AIDS. Africa has 12 million AIDS orphans. Of the 6.5 million people living in developing and transitional countries who need live saving AIDS drugs, only 1.3 million are receiving them.
