Google Envelopes, Beta Of Course

Designers Rahul Mahtani & Yofred Moik from the Industrial Design program at Syracuse University came up with this concept called Google Envelopes. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to map the course of mail and how it can tell a story? They came up with Google Envelopes, which can be sent through G-Mail itself. It’s only a concept, but totally viable and something people can immediately understand.

Eko ligh

Eko light is a simple yet, highly practical concept for traffic lights that not only helps preserve the environment by reducing pollution but promotes safer driving as well. Eko can be easily installed onto existing traffic light systems without much effort while significantly improving overall traffic dynamics.

There are many benefits of the Eko light, the main ones being:

Less stress Since you know exactly how long you have to wait you can sit back and clear your head for a while. No need to keep your foot on the gas. Relax. Less pollution. Drivers can turn their engines off and cut carbon emissions while waiting for the green light. Less fuel consumption Turning off your vehicle while waiting on the traffic light can lower fuel consumption in the long run.

Safer driving – With the Eko light both drivers and pedestrians can be fully aware of how much time they have left before the light changes and that way reduce the chance for potential traffic accidents.

Running Out Of USB Ports?

One of the limitations on notebooks is the lack of USB ports in proportion to the number of devices we would like to hook up. An easy remedy these days is the USB Hub, but YD won’t be YD if we showcased run-of-the-mill solutions! So here’s the Infinite USB – an alternative plug on devices that kinda acts like a tag team. The design speaks for itself, so no point elaborating, however what we can do is talk about its effectiveness and limitations. For starters I don’t think we may be able to tag too many devices one behind the other. I reckon max 3 or 4 before the tag starts to look awkward, but the color coding on plugs will make it easy to identify which plug belongs to which device.

What do you think?

Metamophing Computer Interfaces

Siafu is a PC designed to give people with vision loss or impairment a more intuitive computer experience. It lays flat like a tablet and allows the user to fully interact with it by way of touch. The surface utilizes a conceptual material called magneclay or magnetized liquid. This material has the ability to morph upward into any shape via a controlled electromagnetic field enabling the device to create a braille surface for reading and even pictures in 3D relief.

The technology behind Siafu – Magneclay, is an oil based synthetic agent that possesses limitless morphing capabilities. It has a loose molecular structure but can be infinitely rearranged when acted upon by electrical and magnetic charges. As long as the charges acting upon it remain stable, the magneclay will hold its structural rigidity, allowing it to be touched without deformation.

As for why the device is named after an aggressive African ant? Beats me.

Lights From On High

Hey ther nighttime, how you livin? It’s all dark and whatnot. How are you going to read signs when your out there? You’re totally drunk! I’ve got the solution for you right here. Lights at night, nightlights. This project goes by the name of “Intersection Signalétique.” It’s pretty! Lights from up in the sky, down to the street, up into your eyeballs. As advertisement, as direction, as decoration.

This is a system for the world to show pedestrians the way in their everyday nighttime. This light system is currently placed on the intersection between two major streets in Montreal. The current system, still an experimental prototype, was made up of several projectors suspended from towers, synchronized with the traffic light system already in place. It projects lights on the crosswalks, notifying the passers through of when it’s safe to cross. That and some ads for nearby events while waiting.

This project is part of the Quartier des spectacles Lighting Plan: http://www.flickr.com/photos/quartierdesspectacles/sets/72157621905776298/ and is described by the designers as “a unique way to show visitors the ebullient cultural activity in the Quartier des spectacles, right on the neighbourhood’s main drag of Sainte-Catherine Street.”

Ping Pong From A Doorway

Doors can be fun. No seriously they really can. The Ping Pong Door functions just like any ordinary door except there’s an inner panel that flips down to make a ping pong table. Pop the little plastic net on and get your paddles ready. The only requirements are the adjacent rooms have enough room for you to play in. The only downside is one side of the door looks normal while the other is bright green. Try fitting that into your home decor.

For the handy and crafty, you could probably build this but for the rest of us, the Ping Pong Door goes on sale early next year.

Pencil Printer Part Two

The refined Pencil Printer part II comes with detailed explanations and a better understand of saving the environment from paper trash and permanency of Ink! In here we see how the lead shavings feed the cartridge toner and prints effortlessly on paper. Mistakes are easily erased, and once the crappy memo is done with…you can erase all the gibberish and re-use the paper. A true test of erasing skills!

A Simple Problem Deserves A Simple Solution

Notice how most umbrella straps and fasteners only work unilaterally? Roll it up the wrong way and you’ve gotta undo it and start over. It’s never been an annoyance for me since I always make sure to roll it up the right way but that doesn’t mean it’s a problem that should be ignored. The Double Sided Umbrella uses a magnetic peg and ring so no matter which way you roll up the umbrella, it fastens in place.

Getting All Square with Coke

Alright eco-force! Get ready! It’s time to turn Coca Cola into…whaaa? An Earth-friendly means of distributing 20oz of soda! Coke’s always been a sort of futuristic thinking brand, but this would be a big fat huge giant leap forward in the right direction if I do say so myself. It’s a design for a much more reasonable, smart, ergonomic, and gosh darnit, it just looks lovely. It’s so green, it’s 100% plant based. It’s made out of greens! And it’s much more stackable. And cooler!

Frizzy Light

With its illuminated tape, the Frizzy Light tape measure brings new clarity to measuring.  This measuring tape concept uses a light-conducting tape to assist with measuring in dark areas. With no need to hold an external light source, it frees one’s hands for more convenient measuring. The colour can be adjusted, and the tape is translucent to make accurate measuring easier.

Wallet Light

Sharing the blissful moments with your beloved.  In unexpected situations even a little lamp can be moving.   Just a card from  your wallet sends out beautiful, mellow light, with a cell at its back providing power.   The use of Back Light Unit makes its brighter even.

Money Honey, Glows In The Dark!

You can be a dork at times and hand out the wrong currency notes, especially in a dim lit cab. Don’t expect anyone to rectify your mistakes…your loss is another man’s gain! Tough luck and be careful till the agencies get the heads up on inventions like the Luminous Paper Money. Notes that emit a soft glow, just enough to ensure you hand out the correct note; nothing more nothing less.

Future of Internet Search: Mobile version

This is what I wish the internet search will be able to do with a mobile device in the NEAR future. Touch screen, built in camera, scanner, WiFi, google map (hopefully google earth), google search, image search… all in one device. Like this way, when you can see a building through it, it gives you the image search result right on the spot.
